Development of a COVID-19 vaccine is ongoing across the world, with each country adopting different strategies to combat the pandemic. Several countries, such as the US and UK, have launched successful mass vaccination programs. In the US, the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines have received emergency use approval, while Johnson & Johnson offers the convenience of a single dose. In Europe, the European Union accelerated vaccine deliveries by securing additional deals for doses from Moderna and AstraZeneca. Despite logistical challenges, countries such as Spain and France are showing increasing vaccination rates, thanks to proactive information campaigns to increase public confidence in vaccines. Meanwhile, in Asia, India is the global vaccine production center through the Serum Institute of India which produces the AstraZeneca vaccine. The Indian government has rolled out a vaccination program to cover the entire adult population, with an ambitious target of achieving herd immunity. Indonesia is also active in procuring vaccines, choosing Sinovac and Merah Putih, locally developed vaccines. In Africa, despite additional challenges such as a shortage of cold storage, countries such as Ghana and Kenya are celebrating the arrival of vaccine shipments through COVAX. COVAX aims to ensure equitable access to vaccines for low- and middle-income countries, and the initiative has proven crucial in increasing the number of people vaccinated. On the technological side, current research is also exploring new vaccine motifs, such as Novavax’s second mRNA vaccine, which promises technology that may be easier to produce. Additionally, university vaccine studies, such as those developed in Israel and Australia, are seeking to expand coverage and effectiveness across different variants of the virus. As vaccines develop, it will be important to consider follow-up vaccination programs being introduced in various countries, including booster doses to fight new variants. Israel has been a pioneer in administering third doses with promising results. Other countries, including the UK, are evaluating similar conditions to maintain the vaccine’s long-term effectiveness. The development of the COVID-19 vaccine focuses not only on manufacturing and distribution, but also on public education. Effective communication campaigns help address public doubts, as an important part of the vaccination strategy. By creating better understanding, countries can increase participation rates and combat the increasing number of fake news circulating about vaccines.
